The United State government sent a clear signal recently that it recognizes the Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II and his government as a critical power centre in East Africa when the US Ambassador Jerry P. Lanier trekked to Banda Palace to meet the Lion of Buganda. On February 18, 2009, Ambassador Lanier ignored the NRM’s claims that the Kabaka and Buganda nation are ancient and dying cultural institutions without any political power. He held extensive discussions with His Majesty on matters of mutual interest to the two nations of Buganda and United States of America.
The meeting was attended by Katikkiro, J.B. Walusimbi, the Attorney General, Owek. Apollo Makubuya.
Ambassador Jerry P. Lanier is a career diplomat with 26 years of service in the Department of State. Prior his appointment as the U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Uganda, he served as the Foreign Policy Advisor for U.S. Africa Command headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany. Previously, he was the Director of the Office of Regional and Security Affairs in the Africa Bureau at the State Department. Mr. Lanier has also served in the Philippines, Kenya, Thailand, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Ghana.

Great news from one of the international friends of Buganda – U.S.A!
This meeting was infact long overdue! I must, however, mention that the new U.S Amabassodor had earlier made a most regretable statement in his maiden interview with some Ugandan newspapers regarding his take on the September riots whereupon he appeared to have unreservedly suggested that the murderous M7 regime was right to have murdered unarmed 72 people {71 Ugandans + 1 Congolese} in cold-blood ostensibly acting in “self-defense”?!? Many of us who read this particular aspect of Ambassodor Jerry P. Lanier otherwise generally good interview were left dumbfounded. There is no where in the civilized world where governments are justified to massacre their own citizens in the manner the M7 military junta did in September 2009 ostensibly in the name of the so-called SELF DEFENCE to which the Ambassodor Lanier regretably alluded to in that interview. Besides, after that heneious crime of the September – Buganda massacres by the Kampala murderous regime of M7, no indepedent commission of inquiry into the circumstances leading to the massacres and the criminality carried out by the regime and its thugs during the massacres has so far been carried out apart from a so-called ridiculous report by a one Prof. Barya talking pretty much about obvious and lauphable things.
Anyhow, I just wish that the Amabassodor revists his earlier stand of lending his tacit support to the Kampala regime in murdering 72 Ugandans + 1 Congolese in cold blood in the name of the so-called “Self-defence”!
Long live His Majesty Kabaka Mutebi II!!!
