SSEMUJJU NGANDA: The reason Ugandans hate Uganda

On Friday, February 20, I and my sweetheart Faridah Ssemujju went to Hotel Africana to watch Eagles Production’s Haruna Mubiru launch his Ticket Bazigulawa song. Being a journalist, I spent a bit of time analyzing the behaviour and response of the crowd to the music, musicians and everything else on stage.
When the national anthem was played to kick off the show, more than half of the crowd remained seated with only a few raising their hands.
But when Ekitiibwa kya Buganda was played, almost everybody stood up to honour it.

The second point I noted was the choice of guest of honour. It was the youthful Buganda minister of state for Information, Medard Lubega Ssegona Karyamaggwa.
I have attended quite a bit of Eagles Production shows and can speak about a changing trend with confidence. Before, government ministers like Mike Mukula and senior army officers like Lt. Gen. Katumba Wamala, Gen. Salim Saleh, Brig. Elly Kayanja would be selected as guests of honour. The last time one such government person presided over such as launch, people told him “twakoowa”, meaning “we are tired of you”.
The organisers noticed this and stopped inviting these government cadres as guests of honour. They shifted to Kampala traders such as Godfrey Kirumira and Med Sebaggala.
These were eventually replaced by Buganda Kingdom officials or opposition figures such as Erias Lukwago, Betty Nambooze and Nabilah Sempala.
The choice of people to invite as guest of honour and the refusal of the crowd to honour the national anthem is a big lesson to our leaders, especially President Museveni who has used part of his campaign tours in north and eastern Uganda to preach patriotism.
Ugandans are not stupid people and know very well who to associate with and for what. The union with Museveni who represents Uganda the country has become a union of money. People clamour to be ministers not to serve their country but to partake of the national cake which Museveni is distributing. Majority of people in Parliament didn’t seek to go there to make life easier for all Ugandans but to improve personal fortunes.
Have you ever wondered why credible Baganda have volunteered to serve the Kabaka of Buganda without pay and few of these are even willing to serve as ministers in Museveni’s government? What is it that drives people towards Mengo and away from Museveni? I think patriotism lessons should begin from here.

I saw this behaviour at Haruna Mubiru’s launch replicated after the Owino Park Yard market got burnt. Museveni went there first and attracted a reasonable crowd. He promised Shs1 billion and more.
But it was real madness when the Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, visited the vendors a while after Museveni. People removed their shirts and laid them down for him to walk on. They were chanting that “the tenant (Museveni) has gone and the landlord (Kabaka) has come.”
These are better patriotism classes than the six commandments Museveni appears to have coined while in Jinja last week.

I liked the Owino drama even more when it came to pelting the once popular Kampala Mayor, Al-Hajji Nasser Ntege Sebaggala, with stones and shoes. Not because I hate the man but the display of civic awareness that resulted in mistreating Sebaggala excited me.
We must collectively force the leaders to know that an office is a public trust and not a family or personal empire. Ugandans don’t like Uganda because those in charge of it have appropriated all public resources for the benefit of themselves, their families, friends and in-laws.
Those in charge of security don’t know how to stop the fire burning our markets and schools through intelligence gathering and though investigations.

They have filled intelligence organisations with home boys and relatives. Money meant for intelligence gathering is used to buy the next available plot in Kampala and Wakiso. How can a leader preach to you to love your country when his men and women are exhausting the resources of your country? Money meant for fixing potholes is being used to construct personal bungalows in Nakasero, Kololo, Mbuya and Buziga.
In fact, if the fire that burnt Owino had gutted Parliament, State House Entebbe, or Police headquarters, there would have been wild celebrations on the streets of Kampala. These institutions and their managers represent the general suffering in the country. The President has elevated himself to the level of a master and all of us his subjects. He is only accountable to himself and maybe his wife and children. That is why Karimojong have celebrated the appointment of his wife minister in charge of their affairs. They know Uganda has become a personal estate and only a member of the Museveni family can guarantee you something. Very soon you will hear soldiers demanding that Lt. Col. Muhoozi Kainerugaba be made the army commander because he can guarantee them promotion. It is such things that make us hate our own country. That is why I supported the idea of Buganda seceding, not because I am a tribalist, but a government where Museveni is the President, his wife a minister, his brother a senior advisor, his son a commander of Special Forces would do well for Ankole and not Uganda.

Abaganda, kino kyekisera buli embuzi okudda kunkondo yayo!

More than 3/4 of the officers in the military armed forces , police and prison departments are manned by the tribe of Mr. Museveni; the majority of the "juicy" public service departments ala URA and other Authorities, Bank of Uganda, cabinet, diplomatic missions, etecetra are occupied by Mr. Museveni's tribesmen;his son is the commanding officer of the so-called Presidential Protection Brigade (matter of fact a battalion); his half-brother is a minister of sorts; M7's inlaw Samuel Gutesa is already an extremly influential minister of foreign affairs; now his own wife is a minister of Karamoja or something... Pretty soon, his mistress X or Z will minister in charge of this or that. And the time to hear is an announcement of any of the chief's grandson being the head of the army or a minister for this or the other! Oh, how pitiable indeed!!!

And then one blames my sister Beti for championing Buganda's interests in the midst of this most primitive megalominiac dictatorship of M7? Gime a break!!!!

I almost became an FDC-Card bearing member up until I looked more closely at Hon. Betty Kamya's point of view on Buganda vis-a-vis her party's or is it "former" party's slogan of "one country one people, one people one country". I now fully agree with Betty Kamya to the extent that she now fully represents my personal views on Buganda Kingdom and thus qualifies for my support. Congs, Beti!

Owange Busagwa,

In a away you are making my point. When there is no official commonly understood standard of performance for a person as key as the katikkiro then buganda operates on luck. Suppose the next katikkiro after walusimbi turns out to be even much more obedient to M7!

Can you think of any serious institution today that can withstand serious enemy forces like M7 but has not performance standards for its leaders? Relying on oral history in this information (and misinformation) age cannot not work even for social club.

Awangaale Magulu Nyondo!

Sam,

I wish to slightly differ with you on your suggestion for a written roles' and responsibilities' document to guide the Obwakatikiro and the like. And here is the reason why:From time immemorial, the Buganda norms and traditions have been engrained not on pieces of paper and blocks of walls but on the hearts and minds of the Baganda. These things almost come automatically from the time we are born up to the time we pass on to the other world. It would, therefore, surprise me that Katikiro Walusimbi would need some sorts of written constitution to guide him do what is in the best interests of Buganda Kingdom. Ono omwami ali mukulya mululire n'emuzisse! He is double-dealing. That is why he currently conducting clandestine meetings with M7 on matters concerning the Buganda Kingdom.

Nay, the man is just a conman and completely incompetent in the affairs of politics and management. Sam, how come then that Katikiro Muliika or the Ag. Katikiro Ssendawula or even Katikiro Mulwanyamuli did not goof around this much the way this gentleman is doing. Sam, this man is nothing but a wolf in sheepskin.

Awangaale Ssabasajja Kabaka Mutebi II!

Omulongo Nakato,

As I read your article - I hope it is really not the last one, Nakato!!! -I am both saddened that you are leaving the Post onto which you have made invaluable contributions over time by way of your insightful articles and/or contributions on the Buganda Kingdom vis-a-vis its enemies ala M7, etectra; and also glad that you are leaving the Post with your head high above your pair of shoulders after having finished a good run on the track and field for the advancement of the aspirations of the Buganda Nation and Obwakabaka bwa Buganda. Congratulations, Omulongo Nakato!

Certainly, everyone of us is fully aware of the almost perilious journey any Muganda Nationalist will walk as they make their individual, respective and collective contributions and/or sacrifices towards the achievement of our most chersished Obwakabaka and the Buganda Nation. By M7 still illegally holding onto Buganda properties, including Buganda's Mailo Akenda, the Gombolola and Masaza lands and Headquarters, our wetlands and forest, M7's incredulous refusal to pay Buganda Kingdom billions of accumulated monies from the "rented" properties ala High Court properties near Bulange as well as the Katikiro's official House and Quarters just opposite to Lubiri Palace and now housing the Joint Research Centre, and many others properties including the Kabaka's own 350 square miles of land that are illegally being occupied by his such miserable Banyarwanda/Banyankole/Bakiiga cronies as Mwesigwa Rukutana Rugunda, M7 hopes that he can succeed to impoverish and destroy the Buganda Nation without firing off as many bullets as his political god-father Kawenkene Milton Obote Opeto did during the 1966 Lubiri Massacres. Glad though, much as this is the conspiracy of these Banyarwand/Banyankole and Bakiiga against Baganda and other Ugandans, this scheme is increasingly apearing to be falling flat on its tummy, and will ultimately come to naught in a similar manner his other fake projects have.

Nakato, as you leave the Post to go look for better means of survival, know that you will certainly be dearly missed by many of your readers, not least me Busagwa. I have always looked pretty much forward to reading and savoring any of your most dedicated articles to the Buganda missed. Please know that all the efforts you have committed for this noble cause will not be forgotten, are very much appreciated and have been pretty much inspiring to many of us. Kindly continue with the struggle for a liberated Buganda anywhere you will be. I know you certainly will, Nakato!

Aruta Continua! Webale nyo obutaswaza abazaana ba Kabaka!

The way JB Walusimbi has miserably failed as Katikiro makes it critical that Kabaka Mutebi quickly modernizes his kingdom to where (at least) the duties and responsibilities of a Katikkiro are documented and public.

What has Walusimbi achieved after one year in office? Nothing!

First he disobeyed over Kabaka Mutebi on M7's new land grabbing law in order to secure payment of his State House construction invoices. For us, he has only failed. He abandoned his Kabaka during the Bululi stand-off. After being told by Rugunda, Sebunya and Bukenya, he did not warn Nambooze and others that they were to be arrested. He got Buganda involved with madman Mummur Kadaffi and embarassed Nnabagereka. He hid from Nkoba Zambogo after Kabaka's officials were kidnapped by M7. He allowed Ahamed Bamweyana to con Nambooze from getting a visa to attend Ttabamiruka '08 in the USA. He is now working with M7's State House representatives and Gilbert Bukenya to get Buganda involved in the Seruranda religuous scam. The man is out of control!

If the duties and responsibilities of the Katikkiro and his cabinet were documented and public there would bu much less opportunity for con artists (abasazi bensawo) like Walusimbi to get away with their katemba.
