If your name is Kayongo or Busuulwa or Nambooze then be happy! Your clan, Kkobe (a purple fruit), are the new national champions of the Ebika bya Baganda Football League (Baganda Clans men’s soccer league). They beat Endiga (sheep) by 1-0 on Saturday 23, 2008. His Majesty, Ssabasajja Kabaka Ronald Mutebi II attended the two championship games and appeared happy as a capacity crowd of over 25,000 loudly cheered the players on. Others who attended included members of the Buganda royal family, the Chairman of Baganda clan heads, Omutaka Nakirembeka, other clan leaders and Buganda Government officials.
Ekkobe overpowered members of the Endiga clan in the 13th minute on a goal by Emmanuel Nsereko to clinch the title. Endiga, who played without their star Serunkuuma, never recovered to catch up. This was the first time for Ekkobe to win the Buganda national football championship ever.
On the women’s side young ladies with names like Nankya, Nalwooga and Namutebi from the Mmamba (lung fish) clan won the championship of the Ebika bya Baganda Netball League by beating the Enkima (monkey) clan.
